Life as a Farm Wife
Welcome to the ramblings of my mind and the passions of my heart. Who am I? I am a child of God, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a teacher and a constant learner... often the hard way.

A Rockstar Addition...

So, what started as a pretty drab (freaking cold) Saturday became much more exciting when we decided to add to our family...

a PUPPY!

Meet Rockstar (named by Jett). She is an 8 week old Siberian Husky pup (she has a little bit of lab in her from a grandparent- hence the browny red colouring) who came all the way from Perdue, SK.

Now, we share our farm yard with my in-laws and we took this liberty of adding a puppy to the Schultz Family Farm while they are away... we thought it might be easier to ask for forgiveness instead of permission. Last time they went away, we knocked down the original farm house (I still plan on writing about the final changes to our house/yard). I think we might make them scared to ever leave the farm at this rate!

It's not entirely my doing, though. ;)

A few weeks ago, Mitch and I were talking and I mentioned that I thought maybe this might be a good summer to get a puppy. We have had two huskies for a while. Hurricane (female) for 10 years and Captain (male) for 6. They are great dogs, but we're fairly sure poor Hurricane is nearing the end of her time and she is almost completely blind. She also doesn't tolerate the kids very well anymore. Captain, on the other hand, LOVES the kids. I think Zavi is his favourite and I have no doubt that Captain is Zav's best friend. Zavi looks for Captain out the window ALL the time and is glued to his side when we're out on the yard.

ANYWAY, a common trait of husky's, especially males, is that they wander when they're on their own. If Hurricane were to pass on, I questioned whether Captain would stay on the yard...

That's really all I said to my dear husband. I didn't have to go into talking about how much the kids would love a puppy-- I'm pretty sure that goes without saying! He wasn't convinced that a puppy was our best move, but I'd planted the seed in his mind... ;)

Now, fast forward a few weeks and I have caught my husband looking up puppies on kijiji and google on his own! Yesterday, two people (thanks Dana & Carrie) sent me a link for puppies on Dalmeny Swap and Shop and that's all it took.

Batta-boom, puppy love.

This is the pic from the Swap & Shop add. Rockstar came from a litter of 6 puppies and she was the only one who didn't have the typical black & white husky markings.

It was love at first sight for these two.

Rockstar has a cozy little bed, toys, food/water and pee mat on the floor of our garage. Lucky for her, we have in-floor heat, which makes things pretty comfortable for her. She will eventually sleep in the barn like the other dogs and be able to roam our yard freely, but we have a grace period for cute little pups (especially when it's SO cold out!).

Kalena loves Rockstar, too. She got her to chase round and round our vehicle for quite a while.
I think it may be a new favourite game. ;)

What about Zav? He is thrilled to have a new playmate. When we were driving home from Perdue, he was so ripped off because he couldn't play/hold the puppy.   :)

Is he ready to share his beloved "sucky"?

AND yours truly ;)
Not a great pic, but he is a good snuggler.
I made a new friend today, too.

This sweet pup may just get us through the winter doldrums.
