Life as a Farm Wife
Welcome to the ramblings of my mind and the passions of my heart. Who am I? I am a child of God, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a teacher and a constant learner... often the hard way.

A Schultz Christmas - Farewell 2013

2013 has been a full year for our little family. We entered 2013 as four and will exit as five. God has been good to us and we have much to be thankful for.

(This pic was taken by my friend, Carlena, as a teaser. I can't wait to see more pics!)

I'm not a "crafty" person and I've never joined the ranks of the scrapbooking women (Although, I sure can appreciate what they do!) Perhaps it's a patience issue? Anyway, I DO rather enjoy making movies of my family. (Surprised? ;)

Here is a compilation of our last few weeks. As I watch this video, I feel blessed. So so so blessed.

If you have 5 min. to spare, I hope you enjoy this.

INTRODUCING... (at long last)

Zavier Shane Schultz

Zavier (pronounced- zay-vee-er)

"Zavi" for short. (Zay-vee)

Shane is Mitch's middle name, too. :)

Important details:

Born December 17th at 7:45pm
@ RUH Saskatoon
Weight: 8 lbs 5 oz
Height: 21 inches
Perfect.

How does one select a name for a child??? As I've said in earlier posts, Mitch and I find this responsibility incredibly daunting and have struggled to come up with names for our children. I remember the feeling I had as we wrote down Jett's name on his live birth registration. SO strange. I'm not sure how to describe it except to say: unworthy? God crafts this beautiful child and I don't feel qualified to bestow a name that will stick with this creation through their life.

Anyhow, as you know, we went a "less than traditional" route while naming our children. No "John" or "Mary" in our home. (Although those are both wonderful names ;) We really struggled to agree on names together; both having different preferences. For Jett and Kalena, they were both names we really liked how they sounded. Jett sounds athletic and masculine (at least in our opinion) and Kalena, sweet and beautiful. There is no familial connection to the names and no major attachment to their meanings, although Kalena does mean "pure" in Hawaii and who doesn't want their sweet daughter to be pure??? (Jett is a "black mineral" ;)

Here is what led us to selecting Zavi's name.

It started out as a funny response to people's comments. Several times I was advised that we should go with an "L" name since our first child's name started with "J" and our second with "K". The joke was that we should continue on and finish the alphabet. NOT happening. With a semi-spiteful attitude, I jumped right to Z in the baby book as a way of combatting speculations over alphabetical naming patterns. ;)

A couple of "Z" names resonated with us; Zavier being one of them. (We also liked the name Zander) Here was what it said in my baby names app about Zavier.

The 5-star rating is the rating I gave the name. :) As far as popularity goes, there were only around 300 Zavier's born in 2010. Not a very common name. (Xavier is considerably more popular)

I like the name's association to the Spanish language (I studied Spanish many moons ago and am more or less fluent) and the terms, "savior, bright and splendid" are wonderful wishes for a child. I've also seen the word "wise" associated with the name.

Did you catch the last "meaning," though???

Hilarious. (At least to Mitch and I)

I've looked at many many baby name books, websites and apps and I have never seen another name that means, "New House." I know that's not a deeply touching meaning, but I get such a kick out of it. Is it strange to name your child with somewhat humorous motives? This was not our only reason for selecting this name, (We DO genuinely like the name; especially the shortened form, Zavi) but it did play a small part in our selection process. Why not chronicle a major event in our lives while naming our third precious child? Being the fourth/fifth generations (Mitch is the 4th, our kids the 5th) on a century old farm and replacing the original farm house is a pretty big deal. We will not experience many moves in our lifetime, unlike much of the rest of the world.

Anyway, here's what some other baby-naming sites say about Zavier.

So, there you have it! We are thrilled to have little Zavi as a part of our family. I anticipate many blog posts highlighting just how "bright and splendid" this boy is.

Jett and Kalena came to meet their new brother and it was SO special. Jett is completely smitten with little Zavi. He is quite the baby hog and wanted to hold him the whole time! He even sang lullabies to him. (I was melting, for sure) Kalena, on the other hand, was rather indifferent but if you asked her where the baby was, she would run to Zavi and point at him. I'm sure I heard her call him "Zay-bee" (A combo of Zavi and baby-- so clever ;)

As we packed up to leave the hospital today, I thought about how unfortunate it is that Zavi's first introduction to Saskatchewan fresh air is in these frigid temps. Our truck said -30°C as we drove home.

Snug as a bug in a rug ;)

Welcome to the world, Zavier Shane Schultz!
We love you SO much!

WHY would anyone want to have a baby in December???

Before I get started on my rant, I would first like to say that I don't mean to offend anyone who has chosen (or been chosen) or been born in December. Mostly, this is the grumpy bellow of a woman who's reaching the end of her due date day. ;)

WHY in the world would ANYONE want to have a baby in December? [In Saskatchewan]

I'm sure that people can think of reasons to NOT have a baby pretty much any month of the year, but as a woman who has had an April and a March baby, December seems like the worst option. I could fault careless family planning... but, planning really had no part in this ;)

10 REASONS WHY DECEMBER IS AN AWFUL MONTH TO HAVE A BABY:

     1.   It is stupid cold. Vehicles are less reliable at -40° C

As everyone around here can attest to, cars/trucks do not like the cold.  If you don't plug your vehicle in or park in a garage, you're pretty much guaranteed to not have a reliable mode of transportation the next day. When you need to be ready to head to the hospital so that you can have your baby, you kinda want a reliable form of transportation; especially from the farm. I wonder where they would let us park if we arrived at RUH Emergency in a four-wheel drive John Deere tractor?...

     2.   It is too close to Christmas.

I think it's because Christmas is such a benchmark event in pretty much everyone's life around here, but I have had too many comments like, "Well, hopefully you'll have your baby before Christmas." or "Maybe you'll have a Christmas baby!" Neither of these comments are encouraging to a woman who's due date is Dec. 9th!!! If baby waited for Christmas Day to be born, I would be 16 days overdue!! Not happening, people! ;) (Lord, help me... I DO feel as though I may be pregnant forever)

     3.   It is stupid cold. We are stuck inside the house too much.

In the summer, I can barely keep my kids IN the house, but in this cold, we don't get outside nearly enough. Having a massive pregnant belly doesn't help our cause! SO, we're inside much of the time and our little old house feels even littler as my busy toddlers stampede throughout and pull out every toy they own, only to play with it for 2 seconds and discard it on the floor, providing a dangerous obstacle course for a mama who struggles to see her feet these days!

     4.   There are too many gatherings.

Of course 'tis the season to gather and make merry, but being great-with-child makes it more difficult to get to many gatherings. Furthermore, being a woman who may or may not be battling ridiculous hormones, I can't be expected to have control of my emotions as I receive the knowing sympathetic "look" from every woman who has ever had a baby. Oi vay! As if having largely swollen body parts isn't unattractive enough, the blotchy face of a woman who can't keep it together completes the pathetic appearance I'm [NOT} going for. ;)

     5.   It is stupid cold. I can't walk myself into labour.

With my first two pregnancy experiences, I did a lot of walking near the end. Perhaps this was my futile attempt to hasten the arrival of my babe, but at least it felt like I was DO-ing something! I did walk down the driveway one time this evening, but by the time I returned to the yard, my thighs were frozen. Not helping my cause...

     6.   There is far too much baking and sweets to indulge in.

For most of this pregnancy, I was doing pretty good and not gaining as much weight as I did  in my other two. However, as we approach Christmas, there is more and more baking just lying around for the taking and this pregnant mama does not need much convincing to indulge.

     7.   It is stupid cold. Babies get a poor first impression of the world!

Seeing as this is our third child and we have pretty much a whole basement full of baby gear, there isn't much we've needed to purchase in preparation for this child. BUT, because he is a December baby, there IS more gear needed, believe it or not! I never bought a warm carseat cover for my first two babes, but as the temps have been hovering below -30° for a week now, I think it's been bumped up the priority purchase list! You gotta think that these frigid temps are a brutal welcome to the world for the sweet babies born this month!

     8.   It is year-end, so money is more tight.

Of course we all spend extra money leading up to Christmas and as the year comes to an end, things are a little more 'tight'. This is unfortunate as my motivation to cook plummets and my desire to eat out sky rockets!! ;) It's also unfortunate that online shopping can prove to be such a good distraction...

     9.   It is stupid cold. I have a nasty sinus cold AGAIN!

Yes, you can get a cold at any time of year, but THIS is the season where colds roam rampantly. I think that I can thank my sweet Kalena for 'sharing' these brutally plugged sinuses with me. :( To a mama who has struggled to sleep for the past few months, this is NOT a welcomed addition!

     10.  It is STUPID cold!!!

Have I made my point? ;)

I do pride myself on generally being a "glass is half full" kind of gal, so I DID track down a positive thing about this time of year. ;)

I do wear what I like to call, "comfy" clothes fairly often these days. ;)

Forty weeks. I truly pray this baby boy does make his entrance VERY soon! He can't help it that he's a December baby ;)

Our House Grew Legs!

There is a new structure that we are thrilled to have on our yard and it stares at me through our back windows. I think it's beckoning me to come and dwell, so it will be a long month or so to wait before we can move in to our new house.

I WILL have a few things to distract me; like a new baby ;) hopefully sooner than later. And there's Christmas...

It was exciting to watch our house on the final leg of it's journey from Hague to our farm. I think it drove almost entirely grid roads, so hopefully it didn't inconvenience anyone too much!

Here it's across the field, coming down our road.

Turning onto our drive...

Onto the yard!!!

Old house, meet new house. ;)

Preparing to back in place.

The cutest little spectators ;)

There were a few branches that had to sacrifice their home to move ours in.

I'm guessing this guy has NO problem parallel parking ;)

Almost there! You can see the basement foundation behind the house on the left.

Getting ready to "roll!"

And it's IN!
Love this.

I found these videos on youtube that make our move look small-fry. It's pretty amazing what can be moved!!!

I am VERY glad that our move didn't have an unfortunate incident like this:

Our new house is safely in place and it looks great! I can't wait to LIVE in it, but I'll have to wait for a few important details like: electricity, heat, a basement floor etc... ;)

The Home Stretch

THIS is what I have been eagerly waiting to see. ;)

In a few of my earlier posts about the house, (Here's to a New Era & A Great Detour) I talked about how excited I am about our fireplace wall. I am really happy with how it's shaping up! Now, I'm conflicted in my mind about whether I should stick with my original plan to add more floating shelves above the long shelf on each side, OR not put up shelves and rather, hang a photo gallery... Thoughts?

I love, love, LOVE how bright this living room is!

View of our newly installed kitchen from the living room. I am getting excited!!!!
(My new stainless steel appliances have been purchased and will nicely fill their spaces!)

View from the dining area through to the living room.

Different angle. ;) (Overkill???)

I am very happy with the white cabinets and dark countertops!
(AND I can't wait to use my island!)

My flash gave this pic some funny hues, but THIS is a section of my fabulous mudroom. :)
I am thrilled that we will have a space to come in from outside and shed our mess BEFORE we reach the rest of the house. YAY!

A look down our hall, into the bathroom and the kids' room.

These two yahoos will be sharing a room in the near future... pray for us! ;)

Lena's checking out the closet in the "baby" room that she will likely take over in approx 2 years when her brothers will become roommates.

We were all admiring our doors and making sure they could open and close ;)

From the hall into our master room.

Our master room's "feature" wall ;)

The siding is ON and the house is pretty much ready to GO!
We're hoping to see the house in OUR neighbourhood very soon!...
(another blog post impending)

Oh yeah, and we should have another baby in two-ish weeks. ;)
The home stretch...
